Susanna's Kitchen

We went to a new music venue last night called Susanna's Kitchen at Wimberley United Methodist Church. Going to church to listen to music you ask? The church is located off RR12 on the way to Wimberley, about five minutes from our house. We arrived at 7 when they said the doors would open only to find an overflowing room of I'd say 200 people. We got lucky when chairs were moved to the side of the stage so we found ourselves three rows back. Everyone was there to see Wimberley's own Kevin Welch, along with Jimmy Lafave and Gretchen Peters.  It was another night for musical memories in the Texas Hill Country...

The first highlight came after Jimmy Lafave sang his opening number saying, "There's love in the air tonight."  At that point a young man sitting two rows in front of us got up, and then down on one knee proposed to his girlfriend. We were so close we could hear every word. The guy was so emotional he had a really hard time getting his words out, but luckily she tearfully said, "I will!"  Which set the tone for the evening.

Later Kevin Welch sang a new song about a guy (William) who meets a girl (Lila) in a park by getting her phone number off her lost dog's (Sligo) dog tag. It really was a very clever tune and had a really nice sound. Can't wait to see if he records it one day as "The Ballad of William and Lila" or "Sligo's Song".  He ended the evening with "Til I'm Too Old to Die Young."  That song was written for his daughter Savannah's birth 27 years ago. She is now a member of the group called The Trishas who have also recorded the song. Kevin said she just gave birth to his first grandchild just a few weeks back at his cabin in Wimberley.

Gretchen Peters was not familiar to us at all. Turns out she has recorded Grammy nominated songs for such artists as Martina McBride (Independence Day), George Strait and others. Her husband was playing the piano and played on everyone's songs. She really has great lyrics, a nice voice and great fingerwork on the guitar.

We'll be heading back to Susanna's Kitchen as soon as we can.  Tranquility base here, we have landed.
