We do have a roadrunner or two along Cascade Trail. I followed this one across our yard and got the picture in our neighbor's driveway. They have very colorful markings (red and blue) by their eyes. Sorry I was not able to get closer. They move fast.
Let's see how this cropped version of the picture looks online ...
Fortunately, the roadrunner in our living room is easier to see. He was made by Melanie Fain, an artist in Boerne who has an interesting website that details how she makes her hand-colored etchings.
We first met Melanie at an art show in Kerrville last Memorial Day. At the time we just bought a set of notecards, but we were really struck by the feel of her work. Then in October she sent us an email about a limited run of 35 etchings that she had made of a roadrunner ... so we headed out to Boerne, where we got to see her studio and chose to get one of the etchings (11/35) in a burled wood frame she made herself. This image from her website gives a better view than the one from our living room.
Backing up the story a bit ... we actually arrived in Boerne a little early, so we drove around a bit before going to Melanie's studio and happened upon the Welfare Cafe. We asked her about it and ended up going back for dinner, where I had schnitzel, spaetzle, and red cabbage (all for the first time). As we ate, two guys played mellow jazz on acoustic guitars. All in a 96-year-old former post office/general store in the middle of nowhere. Gotta love Texas!
